Infrared (IR)

suzhou-foo-01.jpg

My attempts at IR (technically near infrared) photography. Plant life reflects infrared light extremely well giving vegetation a very odd dreamy look.

Initial images achieved with stock Nikon D80 using screw on filters at 720nm, 760nm, and 860nm. Results were much less than desirable. After weeks of frustration, purchased a used Nikon D70s which was reported to be much more sensitive to infrared light. This turned out to be true, but the exposure times were still too high for hand held shooting and setting up the shot was difficult as the screw on filters block the viewfinder. Made a trip to the hardware store to purchase a glass cutter and some sandpaper, opened up the camera to remove the internal IR cut filter, and cut a new filter from my 52mm 720nm screw on. The first test shots from the modified camera showed a massive improvement. From now on, all IR will be shot with the D70s.

HDR

Small_DSC_6153_4_5.jpg

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a type of image created by blending tones from several exposures to create an image which is much more vivid than possible with a conventional camera. No special equipment is needed, just several exposures of the same image and some time in post processing.

Suzhou Canal9 viewsDiscovered that the used macro lens does a great job with IR. Was on the way back from UTown (electronics mall) and caught this out of the corner of my eye. Went back and took a shot to see what would happen. The sun was obscured by clouds so not a brilliant scene, but pretty cool.

Waiting7 viewsActually, waiting on me to quit screwing around with these crazy HDR experiments! Pinky's a good sport though, and she's easily bribed with some caramel.

International Commerce Centre - Hong Kong7 viewsModified Nikon D70 - Kowloon's new tower to compete with Hong Kong's Two International Finance Centre which comes in at 415m high. This building will be 118 storeys, 484 m - 1,588 ft. I hope to get back to HK sometime when this is complete and capture an image with both towers.Aug 22, 2009

Union Square - Hong Kong8 viewsModified Nikon D70 - These are the first "real" shots with the modified D70. Shooting IR hand held and being able to use any lens in the arsenal totally rules. It was even a cloudy day. Exposure time was the same as a normal camera.Aug 22, 2009
